The Unforgettable Trip Part 1: Pune-Delhi-Manali

The plan was ready for years, ppl were willing for ages but somehow we never took-off for the most awaited trip... But M (Do check out her Travelogue and awesome Blog) and I were as resolute as SRK was in MNIK to meet the President; we just had to do this before I started B-school.

“LEH-LADHAK we are coming..” on second thoughts now, it’s more like “Leh Ladhak we were coming”

Day 1:
AJ (who dropped out of the plan multiple times but finally stuck along with us like a hair on the soap) and I started from Pune by Durronto Express from Pune to Hazrat Nizamuddin, Delhi station. The journey was full of chaos thanks to the cranky kid in the coupe. AJ gave him dirty and nasty looks but to her and my dismay the kid was quite a fighter. The food took me back to hostel days when the food was insipid and slimy. Needless to say AJ was crestfallen as she wasn’t able to get her timely portions of food. We spent most time reading till a salesman (who I thought could teach ‘How to Sell’ at any top B school) conned AJ into buying a deck of playing cards for 90 freaking bucks. 52+3 pieces of paper for 90 Indian Rupees!! That was some serious business. So reading (I read ‘Indira, a biography of Indira Nehru Gandhi’), playing cards and cursing the cranky kid (at times his mom too) kept us busy and Delhi arrived at the wee hours of the day.

Day 2:
Growling stomachs and the scorching heat disarmed us from thinking straight and we took an auto for 300 bucks to travel the 10kms distance between us and delicious food. I do NOT regret it!

CM welcomed us in her typical no-hug-only-handshake fashion. We hugged her nonetheless. CM’s mom had made one of the best breakfasts I have ever devoured (this word will be overused in the following text, be warned) on; Aalo Bhaji and Parathas. Now that stomach was full, it was time to do the next favorite activity; actually I am not sure which was our MOST favorite activity; Sleeping or Eating?? It’s like choosing your favorite kid or choosing between Khwaja and Aarjeyaan. One just cannot pick one. So we slept till it was time for us to catch the bus from ISBT, Kishmiri Gate, Delhi.

We took a Metro from Patel Nagar to KishmiriGate with a stopover at Rajeev Chowk to shift from Blue Line to Red Line (or some jazz like that). The KishmiriGate Metro has an ISBT exit and the station is just a few strides away. ISBT was dilapidated and smelled as if there was a swimming pool of urine close by. But time did not allow us to go check that out!! Sigh!!
As I had earlier mentioned, or maybe I didn’t; we were supposed to travel in a group of 4 but SK cancelled on the 11th hour and just the trio was left to en… dure err… enjoy with each other… But 3 is an odd no. of ppl to travel with, not just mathematically, even logistically. The bus was a 2*2 and we were 3. CM was stranded on a seat and a CID kind of suspense was building up as to who will come next to her. I took it upon myself to find a female co-passenger for her and looked up with hopeful eyes only to find we were in a bus full of Honeymoon Couples. On a brighter side we were in company of love so to say but I requested many couples and none wanted to leave the sight of their newlywed! Only if it was a pensioner’s bus they would be queuing up to exchange seats with us!! I almost got one guy to move out of his seat when I heard a little mumble from his wife… ”No, I want to sit with you tonight!!” It was just a night long journey dudes… Oh wait..!! Makes sense!! I gave up my search once I had it all figured out.

The journey was uneventful except for AJ puked all night into a poly bag while CM and I slept peacefully. We reached Kullu at 8 AM. The drive from Kullu to Manali was so beautiful that even logs like us didn’t blink let alone sleep. The beautiful Beas River was flowing so gracefully that AJ even allegedly reported that it made her cry. That was a bit too much and she regrets confessing it to us for all the jokes we made. Kullu to Manali passed quickly absorbing the beauty of the river and listening to some exceptional oldie songs.

P.S: Forgot to mention we watched “Dabaaaang 1”; a lahori rendition of the original blockbuster. It was an experience in itself. We were only cranking to what lied ahead of us.

Day 3:
We got down at Manali station at 10 AM. We had made bookings with a Hotel but we decided to ditch that fella and look for a place to crash nearby. In a very classic “Bunty and Bubbly” con style, we got conned into taking a shithole called ‘Pawan Hotel’ near the station for 800 bucks. And when I say shithole I mean a shithole. It was room which could barely fit a bed and 2 chairs and we had to walk on our toes to move around. The sheets were polka dotted only that the dots were made by Cigarettes, the blankets… let me not talk about it... You get the idea, right!! Whatever the conditions, with be our unwavering love for sleep we spent the whole noon sleeping clinching to those godforsaken blankets!

The best discovery of the day was “Aasheiyan Hotel”. Its right on Mall road behind the Bus Stop. Aalo Paratha (aalo was our staple food thanks to CM), Aalo Bhaji, Chola Bhatura and Gobi Paratha…. (slurrrp!!) each dish outdoing the other!! We forgot the woes of Pawan such was the magic of this food.

Completely content, we began our search for ways to get to Leh. I was closely monitoring
http://leh.nic.in/ from Delhi. Manali to Leh always flashed in the garish RED as CLOSED. But we knew there were ways to get there rather we were hopeful rather too hopelessly. We visited more than 10 tour operators checking status of road, rates, possibility of reaching and timeline. Many completely dismissed the idea, some were sympathetic, few were daring enough to ‘smuggle’ us but overall the tone was towards the negative side. We were now coming in terms with reality… The dream Ladhak expedition might not happen. Ouch! It was too much to accept.

As we moved from one tour operator to another each kept mentoring we are just 3 and might need a couple more to hire a Sumo or something like that. Also, interestingly, each kept mentioning about 2 guys who visited them ‘just’ before us looking for company too. But we were destined to meet. And meet we did at Antrek “Wanda” Tours. I say ‘wanda’ not cos of their service but cos the lady at the office used this particular word so often that after a point all one could hear was ‘Wanda Wanda Wanda’. Wasn’t very encouraging, but we met these 2 guys there who were looking for company and seemed pretty good company to travel with. Our only criterion was to find ppl who can tolerate the Trio’s noise levels. They fit in well!! May be to their later regret, we couldn’t care less at that point in time. We were going to KEYLONG; it was mid way between Manali and Leh. Hope was still alive, we were bad at budgeting till that point in time though!!!

Happy and merry about the effort of visiting so many tour operators paying off so well we decided to treat ourselves with… what else… A grand DINNER!!! After the grand dinner at another must visit place called ‘Sher-e-Punjab’, we decided to sleep (yes, yet again as we planned to take off at 3 AM to Keylong).

P.S: We also visited Manali Carnival. For some reason a guy (allegedly a Marathi) kept calling it CarVInal. And as sophisticated as we are, we made jokes about it all the time and now we can pronounce Carnival only one way… Carnival!!
Come back for more on the Keylong trip and much more.I wil add pics as soon as I have ‘em.

Cheers,
Anagha

The journey against time...

It is acceptable that after an exhausting 5 day conference the brain doesn’t work that well but it performs to such abysmal levels is unacceptable. So I was set to fly on a 6AM flight out of LA to Chicago. Yes, 6 AM!! I guess I had started losing it that time itself. And for god knows what reasons.. actually could be the party that night.. I booked the cab for 4 freaking AM. Another friend had an International flight to catch at 6.30 AM and I rubbed of my imbecility to him as well and he too agreed to leave at 4 jinxed AM. FYI: we knew it takes min 30 mins to reach the airport from the hostel.
The lovely day before the journey was spent at Universal studios, Hollywood by yours truly without ever reconsidering the the departure arrangements. As I was shouting my tonsils out at the Jurassic park and Mummy ride, somewhere a taxi driver was falling sick and contemplating bunking work the next day. As I was happily shopping at the souvenir shop the same guy was deciding not to inform his boss for whatever goddamn reasons. And thus was sealed my date with the most traumatic journey so far...
Tired as an obese guy running the treadmill for 3 entire minutes, we returned to packing, remembering each moment of the last 5 splendid days together so that we don’t forget a single penny with each other and exchanging pictures so that we could show off on FB and back home. The session was so intense that I could hardly catch a wink. My friend and I were ready at 3.55 AM at the hostel reception to err... WAIT!!! I gave the cab guy a reasonable 30 secs of delay time and approached the manager frantically. Turns out the manager was a patient guy and decided to wait 10 mins before he would make the call. It was 4.20 AM we were still at the hostel with no signs of the taxi. Restless, I finally called another cab. And as fate had it, the same obese guy who ran the treadmill was there to pick us up. It took him an eternity to get back in the cab, buckle himself up and get going.
I was just about to heave a sigh... and there I was.. STOP... I forgot my bag pack at the reception. We were just a block away from the hostel so I got down and ran... The longest run of my life... It was 4.30 AM and we were just starting for the airport. Cab driver asked what terminal and my friend did not know his terminal no, it was not even on the print out he was carrying. Very smugly I looked at my print out and announced terminal no 3. We dropped my friend at terminal 1, which btw turned out to be the right terminal for him and his entire journey from there was uneventful and peaceful while I was just gearing up for the crazy ride.
I got down at Terminal 3 and started looking for American Airline counter when a lady which I am very sure was a witch announced that American Airline was Terminal why god why 4. I looked at the godforsaken printout with a new vision and realized terminal 3 was at Chicago. So with my 20 pounds each check in bag and a 8 pound bag pack, the 1xx pound I ran again. It was 5AM and I din not even have my boarding pass yet. I crawled to terminal 4 and tried to get in the queue, it was too long so I got in the self check in. For some reason it asked me $60 and I had no time to argue with the machine so I made the payment and got the boarding pass. Only to realize I was actually traveling to Fargo from Chicago and did not have enough time at Chicago airport for baggage transfer. This stuff cant be made up... It was happening and I was living it...
I HAD to get into the queue to get my baggage tagged to Fargo and the queue was of all the ppl on the earth who cannot use the self check in machine of course. So the pace of the queue can be imaged. I finally had my turn after what felt like sitting thru Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, the lady very graciously asked me for $60. But I just paid it to that good for nothing machine. “Then check in from there” she said with that glint in the eye. It was 5.10 and I had no choice but to give her the bucks... She tagged my bags and we exchanged fake smiles...
Thoroughly tired I ran towards my gate which was 257 miles away from the entrance. But I passed the security hurdle and made it at the gate just in time. The privileged Business class was then boarding. For once in my life I was happy to NOT be traveling Business Class... Little Joys!!!
I gave my boarding pass and entered the aircraft which felt like entering heaven. Uncannily, I was not frustrated or angry at myself. It was a lesson learned and a good change from my boring traveling routine. I even punched the air and smiled as sat on the worst seat on the plane....

CELEBRATIONS!! (Shrivardhan Trip and a lot more in between….)

CELEBRATIONS
(Shrivardhan Trip and a lot more in between….)

The best part of Hostel Life, undoubtedly was forming a new family. Family, whose members were chosen by me and then the beautiful institution came to life. An Extended Family called “ ANARS “.

ANARS means Anagha Neha Avanti/Aditi Rujuta Snehal/Surabhi. I know it’s a little clichéd for my creativity :P but once formed we never looked back to changing it just to make it sound cooler. Its like ones second name, love it or hate it, one has to shove it up every time one writes his/her full name [Names like P.K Gire, I. M Dukre and what not :P] I guess I’m digressing. The point is ANARS is the name of my Hostel Gang, My Extended Family.

Birthdays is a HUGE affair for we Anars. Its like a Family celebration. Like traditional families celebrates Diwali, Holi etc. My fly celebrates Birthdays religiously. And this time it was doubly celebration time as two birthdays fall on 28th Feb and 1st March, and as good as it could get it was a weekend. :D :D Life sometimes, just sometimes tries to behave well :P So, we decided to take full advantage of this opportunity and plan a get – away. After a lot of discussions and arguments the final place was decided to be KONKAN, Shrivardhan et al. All the Family members arriver from every nook and corner of India [I’m jus kidding, the 4 of us stay in Pune and 3 in Mumbai :P]

We decided to take off a little late on Saturday after some nice sleep and all. All bags packed and we were off in an AC TAVERA [this piece of info is just to make some of you jealous :P] The car had a very good music system even a DVD player n good display. The driver also seemed completely harmless and little did we know, it was just the lull before the storm. We asked him to play music and……..

“Tum tho thaire PARDESI…Saath kya nibhaoge.. eeeeee”
Change
“Aacha silla diya tune mere pyar ka…. Yaar ne hi loot liya ghar yaar ka”
Change
“Tu pyar hai kisi aur ka. Thujhe chata koi aur hai...”

I won’t disagree that initially we loved these B- grade songs, even sung along at the top of our voices but later it took a toll and we HAD to stop the music… We then demanded to start some DVD, it began with some chanting in the name of the Almighty!!! We waited patiently for it to finish and some real action to begin…. Five minutes passed … ten minutes passes but the chanting wont stop… Finally I succumbed to my impatience and mustered the courage to ask him what this jazz was???? The driver, unperturbed by my impatience, smiled back and replied “Chant in the name of the GOD!!! One should always take sharan to god and all shall be well”…… BEEP BEEP !!!! I mean we all do our religious and praying bit BUT we were here for an HOLIDAY for GOD’s sake. I, with all my due respect to him and his chanting asked him to shut it down.
Thanks to Scooby’s N73 we had some music backup, she has A- to B grade songs :P

The journey passed discussing some office gossips and the stories bout our NEWLY FOUND CORPORATE WORLD. [Friends from TCS were dumbfound as they still are to have a rendezvous with this world. There Corporate journey is limited to Carom and Cafeteria :P… Sorry Guys… Couldn’t avoid it!!! ] Its very fascinating to know how our conversation have slowly changed from College gossips to Office politics, from bitching about Matrons and profs. To bitching about our Managers and TLs, from SMSs to E Mails, from casuals to Business formals… Discussions changed but one thing will never change… We still have this irresistible urge to share each and every story of our day to day life… :D Wish it stays so for ever. Amen (Driver shall be happy to know, I believe in God.. :P)

We reached Shrivardhan at about 6 PM, and approached the place where our bookings were done. Disappointment and anger possessed me as soon as I saw the place. I mean I’ve been to Konkan so many times and always had the best of accommodations and this place was just short of being called a DUNGEON. I had a strong urge to strangle the B ‘day girl’s neck as she had done the bookings but only because it was HER birth day, she was saved from my wrath. We decided to spend as less time place in that dungeon as possible and hit the Beach as it was just an hour left before ‘Sunset’.

“Sea” always arises a concoction of complex (wow, alliteration.. :D) emotions within me. Awe, Fear, Respect, Ambition, Modesty and many more….. The Ocean has never failed to teach me a new thing every time I’m around one. Words have abandoned me as I try to explain what I learned, may be the experience is too inarticulate to explain. (Too philosophical eh….) Well, I learned I should wear tight pants so that I don’t have to hold and run races with my friends on the sea shore… :P :P

The sea venture ended and we were back at the Dungeon to spend the rest of the night. (YA, we had dinner at some place where we met, rather saw a Marathi actress, I had no clue who she was but my mom was elated to know I SAW her when I told her this over the phone :P) We began with a Cards session and what a session it was!!!! All laughter!!!! I lost some countless games in a row, Snehal, who with all her faith had betted on me lost all her money as well as her confidence on me…. Duh… I cannot I got so unlucky while playing “3 Cards” that I got a “2” while we were playing highest card wins and a “king” while playing the opposite [I’m NOT making up this shit, it actually happened to me!!!!] Night always makes one NOSTALGIC, and we were no exception. Our reminiscence session began to evoke all lost memories right from First year First sem to Farewell…. We went from tears to titters through this journey… But what a journey it has been so far….!!! [Words have been defying me too often in this post :P]

As always, we had decided to go to the beach early morning, which I’m sure all of is knew we won’t, but still we decided just for the heck of it and ended up sleeping till 9 L We got ready and left for HARIHARESWAR. The place has a Lord Shiva Temple [Don’t ask me for any detailed account, this is all I know and also that the Pedhas were too good there…] On the way back we fell a little silent partly due to fatigue and partly because it was time to say good bye YET again. I do it almost every other weekend but I still cant stop feeling bad about it…. Reached Pune at about 6 PM totally content with this itinerary and ourselves.

More Birth days, more achievements, more parties, more gossips, friends, family and CELEBRATION…. What more can I ask for ?????

An evening in the PMT…

It was a fine Thursday… [ Last to last week I guess… (Had written this 1 that time only but couldn’t crunch time to actually post it...) ]
Like any other day….
The only deviation from the 'Standard Format' of my Office life was I had absolutely no work…
Usually, I have lil work :P

Here, at John Deere we need to complete 8.5 hours a day or els the Automated Leave System deducts half day Privilege Leave from my account very ruthlessly :(
But, my bus starts from here at 6.45 while I complete 8.5 hours at 5.30 PM only.
So I decided to take-off on my own rather than finding innovative ways to kill time, like… (there r so many ways I've devised, will dedicate a mail to that some other time :P)
I was in a different sorta mood…

Ideally, I would have taken an auto or something (it costs 150 bucks but even then)…
But, not that day… I thought lets experiment…
So I walked out of Magarpatta City (that’s where my office is located..)
Took a Shared Auto till the main signal where you get all the buses n all…
The auto, which has a capacity of "3" was carrying 7 ppl.. The driver was keen on getting in more but to my luck didn't find more commuters….
The Indian vehicles are completely ROBUST must say… Who said India is way behind in the Automation Industry, its actually progressing in a different direction :P
I could barely breath, partly because there was no space and partly cos of the strange odor in there…
When I got down on my feet I thought an eternity has ended, little did I know there were many more eternities to come :P

I took some 7odd minutes to cross the signal and get on the other end, where I could board the bus….
Like I said, I was in a strange mood….
I spoke wid the kids waiting at the stop…
Asked them bout the gov. schools n all… How they travel, their families n stuff…
Couldn't stop thanking god enough for the blessed childhood I had….
I missed 2 buses as it was overcrowded…
So, a good guy walked upto me finding me totally lost and advised to take a bus to Swargate (the bus junction) and then change from there to my final location, KOTHRUD…
The next bus was Swargate and I was determined to get into this one….
And I DID :D

Inside the bus, it was worse than the Auto I had boarded an eternity ago :P
I could get a place on the reserved "Mahilansathi" (Only for ladies) .. Phew…
There was this completely haggard looking lady, probably she was a worker or something somewhere….
I still cant forget her hands…
One can get such hands only if one break rocks for one whole lifetime….
I felt terrible for her, for ppl like her, for India and for me too… Wish I could help…
She was so disconnected and distorted that she plainly ignored my efforts to strike up a conversation with her… :((
She got down mid-way and a college going girl (guess in some govt. college for Arts or something) replaced her…
I started off with another effort to strike up a conversation…
This time I was kind of successful, not completely though…
I asked her bout the college and teachers…
She was in 12th (10+2) class… Though she looked very old for a 12th class girl…
Suman (that’s her name) washes clothes and cleans at a household to support her studies and her family…
She was very content with whatever she had and didn't seem to care for any big career or something…
How I envied her for that… Satisfaction is something I cant even dream of :P
Finally, got down at Swargate, and to my surprise in 1 piece… :D
I bade Suman a good bye….
She said I was a real nice girl and I couldn’t stop grinning…

But that was short lived, my next task was to find a bus to Kothrud..
I could take an auto (would have costed 45 bucks max) but I was loving the PMT experience…
Found a Bus for my place and boarded it…
I was hoping to meet another interesting person but..
Well, all my journey couldn't be full of interesting ppl…
There was this lady working in some bank (forgot the name) sitting next to me…
She knew the entire PMT time table by heart, no kidding…
She had her whole house hold in a mini bag…
A lil eating packet, water, money, accounts, book, some vegetables to sort out n what not….
The bus took the longest route possible to kothrud from swargate… I almost dozed off due to the vibrations...

Finally, reached home in that semi hazy state... Feelin happy n peevish at the same time... A cherished evening and journey...

All in all...
If you want to roam around whole of Pune, meet some very interesting characters, get a free sauna massage [:P] and still reach the destination in single piece….
TRY PMT…
The best way of TRANSPORT :P

Peace...

Rajgad Trek !!!

The best of plans are the unplanned ones :)

One such plan was the Trek to Rajgad last Saturday. Originally, the plan was to go to Purander Fort, but generally I suggested a plan 'B'.... To pull out some bikes and go hiking to RAJGAD.... Sounded awesome while chatting over the Microsoft Communicator, but where to get the bikes from??? (Most of the ppl in my office are from out of Maharashtra, so don't have vehicles..) Albeit, as the cliche goes, "Will hai to Way hai".. 4 bikes and 7 adventurous trekkers were all set to hit the road...

I can't say it was the most perfect day for a trek, nonetheless it was a pleasent day... The ride from Swargate to Rajgad was way too awesome... Clear road, fast bikes and singin (read shouting) songs.. Had not so good breakfast at "Joshi wadewalas", somehow I always thought Joshi's are not to be trusted :P After almost an hour of racing our bikes on the highway first and then the country roads we reached the pyatha of the huge fort, RAJGAD, the center of all activities for Shivaji Maharaj till he conquered Raigad. There is a small village there and a school. Kids were playing cricket after classes and I jumped in to hit a few sixes (could barely hit a ball though) :( Started the trek towards the top when we couldn't even see the top. The way was beautiful (the least that could be said) with various shades of green and varied insects. Clicking photos, pulling each others legs and admiring the beauty of the nature we were trying to conquer what stood like a un-conquerable mountain. As it wasn't raining, the heat was trying to put our morals down, but we were to settle for nothing less than the apex. Took a lot of breaks in between under the pretext of clicking photos and drinking water but the actual reason was to REST. The mountain was HUGE man !! After hihing for 3 long hours we reached the TOP :D

Water is the most refreshing entity, the whole fatigue was gone in a matter of seconds and we were at a loss of words to admire the abndunt beauty of nature. But alas, happiness is ephemeral... We were hungry, no ravenous and there was hardly any food left :( Not much of water either :( and to top it all Shrikant was insisting on going higher and having a look at BALE KILLA, which was few 100 feets higher and seemed like a much more difficult rather a deadly terrain... No food, no water (we drank the green water from the ponds... Don worry I'm still fine) don't know what gave us the energy to go higher (Guess, it was the shear magic of that place). But while climbing I started to curse my decision, we had to climb almost vertical rocks with the help of what looked to me very loose iron supports.

Like always, I spoke too soon... The view when we finally reached the top was mesmerizing... It was stupendous, mind-blowing and heavnly…

We all sat at the entrance of the Balle Killa, looking dumbstruck at the view. The cool breeze made me forget all about the heat, in fact started feeling chilly after a while… Sat in peace there, marveling. It made me put behind all the worries and filled a lot of positivity inside. I could not help but feel like I conquered the mighty Mountain. After every trek it somewhere makes me a more confident person ready to take-on whatever comes by, cos finally I know, I will be mesmerized by what I get in return of those tribulations.

Then began a session of singing (No, I didn’t) and life couldn’t get better. Naren and Shrikant decided to explore more, I was happy with what I had already discovered. Duddu and Nithin sang melodiously. After trying to absorb as much as we could, began the back journey.

The never ending journey also ended and we were at the bottom yet again. Had refreshing tea and kokam sherbet from a local ‘mama’ who had amazing marketing skills, could give Michele Porter a run for his money :P. We also came to know had we ordered, we could get the lunch delivered upstairs (next time). The ride back home was in full speed… Duddu n I (yes ME) sang all John Denver songs and other favorites and reached home.

This was one hell of an eventful day… Had fun to the fullest and all at just 150 Bucks, including petrol breakfast (no lunch) :D So, more reasons to rejoice. Body ached a lil, but nothing in front of the amazing time the experience and memories…. Few feelings better left unsaid !!!!
